Rising Damp

Rising damp is a relatively rare form of damp and occurs when moisture from the ground travels up through your walls. Essentially the water from the ground is sucked through the bricks and into the walls of your basement or cellar. If you find that you have identified signs of rising damp in your underground space then it is important that you get this sorted as soon as you can. The first signs that you can often see rising damp is by plaster or paint that is peeling, cracking or bubbling and wallpaper that is peeling off. You could also see salts from the water that is in your walls begin to show on the surface of your wall.

Damp can sometimes be confused with damp that is caused by condensation and this can be a real hindrance to the solution. If misdiagnosed, the problem can keep coming back. When identifying rising damp, the Code of Practice for the Investigation and Control of Dampness in Buildings referring to BS5250: 2011 states: ‘One of the most reliable ways that may be used to differentiate between dampness due to condensate and due to rising damp is to compare moisture in the contents of samples of masonry, or preferably mortar, from within the depth of the wall and near the inner surface of the wall; samples from within the wall will not be damp if surface condensation is the sole cause.’

The height that the water might reach due to rising damp can vary greatly depending on a host of factors such as the structure of the bricks and the rate of evaporation. If you have rising damp on your internal walls such as in your basement or cellar then it is important to get rid of it sooner rather than later. One of the most effective ways that we can treat rising damp is with a damp proof membrane.
